CPAP Masks Available in a Number of Comfortable Styles
CPAP
masks are an important part of the machine that helps people who have been
diagnosed with sleep apnea get a good night's sleep. The unit works by
providing a continuous steam of air to the patient to keep his or her airways
open. The CPAP machine may also be used as a treatment option for patients who
have been diagnosed with a critical illness and in respiratory failure. When
newborn babies are having trouble breathing, infant-sized equipment is used to
make the process easier for them.
All
CPAC machines are equipped with a face mask so that the air being generated by
the unit enters the patient's lungs at a prescribed rate. The flow needs to be
forceful enough so that the patient's airway doesn't collapse without feeling
overwhelming. Since patients with sleep apnea are being brought out of deeper
levels of sleep when they stop breathing for a short time during the night,
using this type of device is supposed to help them get the rest they need to
function effectively throughout their day.
Chronic
sleep deprivation is a relatively common problem for people who lead busy
lives. Many of them try to accomplish a complicated juggling act every day
between work or school responsibilities and possibly caring for children and/or
aging parents. If you add household chores into the mix, there is very little
time for relaxation in a person' s busy schedule. Unfortunately, many people
try to skimp on sleep instead of making it a priority. For people living with
sleep apnea, lack of quality sleep is even more of an issue.
Choosing
CPAP masks is very much an individual choice. Once the doctor writes a
prescription for the device, the patient needs to consider what style they
would feel most comfortable wearing. Whatever model is selected, the patient
should make sure that is doesn't slip out of place during the night. That would
defeat the purpose of wearing the mask.
If
a full face mask is being considered as an option, look for one that is
adjustable. Other features to keep in mind when considering this style are
whether it forms a secure seal when placed over the user's face. If the mask
doesn't feel comfortable once it's in place, the full face style isn't the
right choice for that person.
Another
option to consider when looking for a mask is called the nasal pillow style.
This is a sleeker design that doesn't have a forehead contact or a nasal
bridge. With this type, the hoses can be positioned in a downward position so
that they are directed away from the face. This style is a good choice for the
person who likes to sleep on his or her back or side. If the nasal pillow style
of mask seems like a good option, look for one offering nasal pillows of
different sizes so that each nostril can be outfitted with one that is the
appropriate size.
A
small mask is likely going to be more comfortable than one with more
complicated headgear. When looking for this type of product, keep in mind that
the units with a more simple design may be more pricey, but the added expense
is worthwhile if it means more comfort at night. If the goal is to effectively
treat the sleep apnea, the mask must be kept in place during sleep and
uncomfortable CPAP masks don't help the patient to reach that goal. Choosing
the right style will help him or her to get much-needed rest and enjoy a better
quality of life.
