Do You Have the Need for a Hearing Aid?
Hearing problems are becoming ever more prevalent in today’s society as the Baby Boomers age and years of loud engines and concerts take their toll. With more people experiencing hearing loss, it has become important for individuals to familiarize themselves with the related symptoms. The earlier that hearing loss is identified, the better the outcome for the patient. You can do yourself and your acquaintances a service by learning about hearing loss and the most common remedy: hearing aids. If you or a friend may have need for a hearing aid, it is best to discuss the issue with a specialist. However, some basic information is useful for knowing when to visit a doctor.

First, let’s examine hearing aids themselves. Hearing aids are composed of four fundamental parts. The microphone turns sounds into electrical signals, which it then sends to the amplifier. The amplifier, as its name suggests, boosts the volume and sends its information to the receiver. The electrical signal is converted back into sound by the receiver, which then releases the sound into the ear. From there, the sense of hearing works normally; it simply has a louder sound to work with. The fourth part of the basic hearing aid is the battery, which powers the system. Because the effectiveness of hearing aids depends partly on the standard functioning of the ear, a user needs to have at least a minimal level of hearing remaining.

Older, analog hearing aids were able to amplify sound well but were limited because they increased the volume of all sounds. This might not seem like a problem, but it made it difficult to pick out the sounds that the user wanted to focus on. These hearing aids could be programmed, but users still experienced difficulties and struggled with background noise. Fortunately, most hearing aids sold today are digital. These units contain a computer chip that filters and adjusts incoming sounds in order to maximize performance. Desired sounds, like a family member’s voice, are amplified, while extraneous environmental noises are reduced. Digital hearing aids can be programmed precisely to suit the individual wearer. Hearing aids can also be made to perfectly fit an individual’s ears. To do this, a silicon imprint of the ear is made as the basis for the hearing aid mold. The result is a comfortable piece of medical equipment.

So how do you know if you or a loved one needs a hearing aid? Hearing loss is usually very gradual, so it can be difficult to notice. Often, a friend or family member of the patient will be the first to notice the warning signs. Frequently, individuals will begin to have trouble making out each word, even if they can hear the speaker well enough. They may request that things be repeated for them, or they may think that others are speaking too softly. They also may have difficulty hearing amongst groups of people. Ringing of the ears is another warning sign. By themselves, these symptoms may not indicate major hearing problems. If they are experienced together, though, the patient’s hearing may be at risk.

The information in this article does not stand for professional medical advice, and an expert should always be consulted before investing in hearing aids. An audiologist can perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the need for a hearing aid. For those suffering from serious hearing loss, hearing aids are an excellent solution that can enrich lives. As you grow older, it is important to know the warning signs of hearing loss so that you or a loved one can receive the needed help.
