Ostomy Supplies Needed After a Difficult Delivery
When we think about having a baby, we often think about only the most glorious parts of the experience. Even those women who do think about the pain of delivering a child also think about the way that the miracle of birth helps to offset that pain. What we don’t typically think about is how things can go wrong. For example, did you know that there are rare cases in which pregnancy and delivery complications can lead to the need for a colostomy? If that were to happen to you then you would want a doctor who knew about everything from treating the problem to providing you with the right ostomy supplies.

The truth of the matter is that most pregnancies go off without a hitch. However, there are also a small percentage of deliveries that have complications for either the child or the mother. One rare complication in pregnancy can actually lead to the need for a temporary colostomy bag. An example of when this might happen is if the mother experiences an advanced third degree tear from the delivery. Not taken care of properly, this tear can lead to a complicated fistula inside of the woman’s body. The fistula can eventually lead to problems requiring surgery and the use of a temporary colostomy bag.

A colostomy is something that is done when the bowels of a person are affected in a way that they can no longer work properly and a portion of the bowels must be removed. To continue to be able to expel waste from the body, the individual needs to have this procedure done. The procedure produces two parts that need care. First is the stoma, which is the end of the bowel protruding through the abdomen wall for the purpose of expelling waste into a colostomy bag. Second is the ostomy, which is the opening that has been created in the abdomen for the stoma to come through.

Both of these parts of the post-surgery body need advanced care. This is something that you are taught about in the hospital when you have a colostomy. You will learn then about all of the stoma supplies and ostomy supplies that are needed to make sure that the area is kept clean and working properly. Examples of ostomy supplies include skin bonding adhesive and adhesive remover, latex finger cots to keep your hands clean while caring for the area and protective powders and creams to keep the area safe and free of chafing.

You can imagine how much more complicated it is to experience a colostomy when you have just had a baby. Your body has already undergone so many different changes. Additionally, you may be breastfeeding. And you will certainly be worn out from adding a newborn to the equation. That’s why you need a doctor who knows exactly what he is doing. Problems like this are rare in pregnancy. A vigilant doctor will be able to make sure that these problems are prevented. Even if he or she can’t prevent these problems, the doctor will be able to assist you in making the best medical choices.

A good doctor is going to meet all of your needs that come along with pregnancy. In normal situations, this is simply going to mean getting you through the process of pregnancy and delivery. However, in cases where things go wrong and problems like fistulas and colostomies occur, you need a doctor who can help. A doctor who can discuss everything from normal birth procedures to the proper post-natal need for ostomy supplies is a doctor that is really in your corner.
